In 2023, modern Switzerland celebrates its 175th birthday. On 12 September 1848, the old Swiss Confederation became a federal state and the first democracy in Europe. To mark the occasion, Caricatura Galerie is showing works by Swiss artists Lawrence Grimm, Yves Noyau and Ruedi Widmer this summer, who together cover almost the entire spectrum of comic art.
Lawrence Grimm conveys subtle wit with minimalist strokes in small-format avant-garde cartoons. Technoid objects are also part of his repertoire. Yves Noyau's gouache paintings combine delicate technique and grotesque comedy. His ink portraits, on the other hand, are quite "hairy". Ruedi Widmer rounds off the exhibition with classical and political cartoons. In the form of a comic column, he also reveals "The last secrets of a rational world".
