The ruins of Grebenstein Castle are enthroned above the half-timbered town of Grebenstein on the 250-metre-high castle hill. The original complex was built in the second half of the 11th century. Unlike many medieval castles, Grebenstein Castle did not have a keep, but only a palas (main building with living and banqueting hall). This was a large elongated building, the upper floor of which was probably intended as a lounge and dining room for the lords of the castle and guests.
The outer walls of the 37-metre long, 12-metre wide and 13-metre high palas (hall building) are still almost completely preserved today. The complex is surrounded by a partially preserved moat, although the outer bailey and moats can only be guessed at.
Educational trails (eco trails) lead you up the castle hill from the historic old town of Grebenstein or the “Am Burgteich” hiking parking lot. A steel staircase takes you to the viewing platform on the upper wall. From here, you have a wonderful view of the town with its fortified towers (Eulen- and Jungfernturm) as well as parts of the Reinhardswald Nature Park.
The restored castle ruins are now freely accessible and can be visited at any time.
