300,000 years of (Northern) Hessian regional and cultural history under one roof—that’s the Hessian State Museum. Spread across three floors, history is presented from a wide variety of perspectives—from the traces of the first humans to the Middle Ages, from the era of the landgraves to the present day.
The State Museum offers plenty of space for discoveries, special exhibits, and rotating exhibitions. The building itself is also worth a second look: designed by architect Theodor Fischer and inaugurated in 1913, it combines Art Nouveau and Neo-Renaissance styles. Particularly striking is the tower, visible from afar. You can climb it—and let your gaze wander far across the region, which is the central theme of the exhibits on the floors below.
Tower tours take place every hour and half-hour.
