Old town market square

historical site
info point
Central square and intersection of two important long-distance trade routes of the Middle Ages in the middle of the historic old town of Korbach.

This is where the old trade and military routes Frankfurt - Bremen (Weinstrasse or Wagenstrasse) and Cologne - Leipzig (Heidenstrasse) met. A market was held here four times a year - Korbach was granted market rights when it was awarded its town charter in 1188 A.D. In the past, court sentences were also enforced here. The reconstructed pillory and the newly created "stones of shame" based on old models still bear witness to this today.

Today, in addition to the pillory, there is also a medieval Kump and an information stele about the Hanseatic town of Korbach and the old trade routes on the old town market square. The stones of shame hang on the façade of the Zur Waage inn, which was built on the foundation walls of the old town hall.

Directly adjacent on the church square you can find the bronze model of the old town, the Korbach Museum and St. Kilian's Church.
