Visitor Pavilion on Siebenbergen
Kassel is often referred to as the City of the Fifties in terms of defining buildings. These light and airy buildings are often characterised by flowing lines, metal applications, large glazed areas and overhanging roofs.
In keeping with this, a pavilion was created on the southern edge of the Karlsaue state park in Kassel, which fits naturally into the landscape park with its valuable tree population. This building forms an inviting entrance to the flower island of Siebenbergen and frames it picturesquely.
During the seasonal opening from April to October, the pavilion houses a café with gastronomic offerings in addition to the ticket office and museum shop.
Colourful panorama in the change of seasons
Surrounded by a lily pond, the seventh mountain, a good 16 metres high, rises in the Karlsaue State Park at the southern edge of the park. In spring, daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and even the first rhododendrons are in full bloom on three levels. The seasonal play of colours in the leaves, the seasonally changing flower plantings and the view over the surrounding water areas mean that the island always offers its visitors a unique panorama from spring to autumn.
The island combines an immense wealth of plants of over 100 species from all over the world. Flowers and perennials, deciduous and numerous conifers from all continents and native wild plants, water lilies and orchids from northern Hesse are combined and labelled there similar to a botanical garden.
Dogs are allowed on a leash.
Plant guide explains flora
From now on, a new plant guide will accompany interested guests across Siebenbergen Island. Explanations and pictures of the perennials and woody plants offer exciting information about the variety of plants on the island. In addition, over 450 porcelain labels mark the respective plants explained in the brochure.
The plant guide can be purchased for 9.50 euros at the ticket office.
Information on accessibility
The island of Siebenbergen is only partially accessible without barriers. Due to the varying nature of the paths and partial inclines in the terrain, an assistant is required. Wheelchair-accessible sanitary facilities are available in the ticket office area.
History
The flower island Siebenbergen was created in 1710 as a result of the excavation of the large basin with the Swan Island. Several small artificial lookout mountains adorned it before these were partially removed at the beginning of the 19th century and the small island was naturally modelled and replanted in the spirit of landscape gardening. Climatically favourable factors with mild winters allow almost all perennials, ornamental shrubs, rhododendrons and rare conifers to thrive on Siebenbergen.
