Das abwechslungsreiche Wandergebiet über Breitenbach ist vom Basalt geprägt. Besonders an den westlichen Hängen finden sich viele Basaltblöcke, die während der Eiszeiten aus größeren Steinformationen durch Frostsprengung entstanden sind und die sich als Blockhalden ablagert haben. Gerade diese Biotope haben einen sehr hohen Naturschutzwert.
