Sonderausstellung zum 100. Todestag von Gustav Heinrich Eberlein

Open to visitors during the museum's hours of operation.

Special tip: On November 1, the closing event marks the end of the exhibition. Museum director Stefan Schäfer will accompany the event with a lecture.

Gustav Heinrich Eberlein is one of the most significant artistic figures associated with Hann. Münden. To mark the 100th anniversary of his death, the Municipal Museum in the Welfenschloss is dedicating the special exhibition “From the Inner Life of an Artist” to him.

Born in 1847 in nearby Spiekershausen and raised in Hann. Münden, the sculptor, painter, and poet was one of the most renowned German artists of his time around 1900. His works were commissioned for numerous locations in Germany and abroad—including the monumental Goethe monument in the Villa Borghese in Rome and the “Fuente Alemana” in Santiago, Chile.

The exhibition focuses on Eberlein as a versatile artist. Approximately 30 sculptures, historical photographs, personal documents, and print plates he designed provide insights into his life, his artistic self-conception, and his creative process. The exhibition’s title is derived from Eberlein’s literary work of the same name, in which he combined sculpture, painting, and poetry.

Eberlein’s special connection to Hann. Münden is also highlighted. With his extensive collection, he laid an important foundation for the “Altertümer- und Eberlein-Museum,” which opened in 1898 and from which today’s Municipal Museum emerged. The exhibition also recounts the eventful history of his works: numerous plaster sculptures were considered lost for decades before fragments could be rediscovered, preserved, and, in some cases, restored.

The special exhibition was created in collaboration with the Gustav-Eberlein-Forschung e. V. association and invites visitors to rediscover an extraordinary artist and his close connection to Hann. Münden.
