Olu Oguibe's concrete obelisk towers into the sky in the middle of Treppenstraße. "The Strangers and Refugees Monument" was created for documenta 14 in 2017.

Appeal to take in the persecuted

The obelisk is a timeless monument to migration and persecution with the message of Christ carved in Arabic, German, English and Turkish: "I WAS A FREEMAN AND YOU HAVE TAKEN ME IN". At the same time, the work is to be understood as an urgent appeal: In addition to hospitality, tolerance and gratitude, it addresses the fundamental democratic values of our society. The Nigerian-American artist Olu Oguibe designed it for documenta 14.
