The Werra-Burgen-Steig Hessen (X5H) connects Hann. Münden with Tannenburg Castle over 133 km.
The quality-certified hiking trail "Werra-Burgen-Steig Hessen" X5 H with its unique castle character leads through a surprisingly diverse landscape. Pretty half-timbered towns such as Hann. Münden, Witzenhausen, Bad Sooden-Allendorf and Eschwege await hungry hikers and offer plenty of opportunities to take a breather.

A moderate to steep ascent awaits on each stage, but it is always rewarded with an unbeatable view. One of the most beautiful stages is definitely the "Hörne" area near Rothestein Castle in Bad Sooden-Allendorf.

After almost 130 kilometres, the final destination is Tannenburg Castle. Up to here, including all the ascents, you have climbed an outstanding 3,700 metres in altitude.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

In Hann. Münden you should plan a detour to the Tillyschanze or the Weserliedanlage to catch a wonderful view of the town from above. This way you also get your body used to the upcoming climbs.

The most beautiful and varied stage is the route from Bad Sooden-Allendorf via Rothestein Castle and the Hörne to Hitzelrode. This part is also affectionately known as Hessian Switzerland.

Safety guidelines

The Werra-Burgen-Steig (Werra Castle Trail) leads for the most part on paved paths along fields, villages, through forests and over sometimes steep climbs to castles and palaces. Depending on the weather, caution is advised on some sections, especially if it is wet and slippery or even freezing.
