A Gem in the Karlsaue
The Marble Bath was built between 1722 and 1728 under Landgrave Karl of Hesse-Kassel. The renowned Roman sculptor Pierre Etienne Monnot (1657–1733) created the magnificent interior design, featuring marble sculptures and wall reliefs depicting scenes from Ovid’s *Metamorphoses*, as well as medallions featuring portrait busts of Landgrave Karl of Hesse-Kassel and his wife, Landgravine Marie Amalie of Courland. The Kassel Marble Bath represents one of the most significant ensembles of Roman secular sculpture from the early 18th century.
