Peter Fischli is exhibiting

Flashing lights, mirrors, and loose cables: With their vertical supports, horizontal arms, and lights, Peter Fischli’s kinetic sculptures are reminiscent of urban traffic lights or stage elements. Made from simple materials and coated with layers of gray paint, they evoke urban surfaces and create an elusive rhythm of light and sound within the exhibition space. Their shifting signals follow no fixed logic; rather, the sculptures develop their own sequences in shades of white, orange, or yellow.

Some objects are fitted with reflective panes or stained glass; others feature freely hanging wiring. At times, the structures resemble gallows or bare trees. They can be interpreted as abstract compositions, diagram-like figures, or psychogram-like symbols. These sometimes unsettling constructions allude to systems of order, perception, and transcendence, yet elude any unambiguous interpretation.

In his practice, Fischli explores the aesthetics of the everyday and the functioning of systems of meaning. His sculptures address how signs, symbols, and infrastructures in the globalized world compete for attention, circulate, organize our movements, and influence our perceptions and emotions.

The artist was born in Zurich in 1952 and continues to live there today. He became known for his collaboration with the late David Weiss (1946–2012), which spanned more than four decades as part of the influential artist duo Fischli/Weiss. The duo participated in documenta in 1987 and 1997, was represented multiple times at the Venice Biennale (1988, 1995, 2003, 2011, and 2013) and was awarded the Golden Lion (2003).
