Das Wandergebiet um den Erzeberg ist geprägt vom Gesteinsabbau. Während der eigentliche Erzeberg ein großer Basaltkegel ist, finden sich in seiner Umgebung viele Sandsteinvorkommen. Mehrere alte Steinbrüche zeugen von der damaligen Bedeutung des Gesteinsabbaus für Baustoffe unterschiedlicher Art. Heute bieten die stillgelegten Steinbrüche wertvolle Biotope für viele geschützte Tiere und Pflanzen.
Dieser Rundweg verläuft ausschließlich im Wald und bietet viele unterschiedliche Waldbilder. Besonders der nördliche Teil ist vom Sandsteinabbau geprägt. Der Weg verläuft größtenteils auf Forstwegen und wird bereichert durch einige naturnahe Wegestrecken.
